Chardonnay

2013 Chardonnay, Santa Maria Valley

This wine represents a triumphant return for us as we could not make Chardonnay the last two vintages due to botrytis (2010v) and frost (2011v). Almost entirely from the original plantings in Block W of Clone 4 at the iconic Bien Nacido Vineyard, these 40 year old vines are producing magical qualities that only can come from old vines. A small percentage of younger vine Clone 96 from the beautiful Presqu’ile Vineyard is also part of the final blend. Density and concentration combine to form a very flavorful and nuanced wine.

Because of the restraint in the cellar of opting to use neutral barrel (older oak) and stainless steel, the wine has plenty of freshness, vibrancy and salinity that are hallmarks of the ocean influences we receive in the Santa Maria Valley. For those who appreciate the citrusy and minerally side of this grape will love how this wine pops on the palate giving it distance and drive. This wine comes from a very old vineyard on the western edge of the Santa Maria Valley and was fermented and aged in 100% French oak for 31 months. Classic in style with great citrus aromatics.

2013 Bien Nacido Chardonnay, Santa Maria Valley

100% Neutral Oak Fermented & Aged, 45% Malolatic This Bien Nacido Chardonnay bottling comes from the original and most sought after blocks on the ranch from vines that were planted in 1973. Bien Nacido's Block W was planted in 1973 in one of Santa Barbara County's most iconic vineyards. Old vine, Clone 4 Chardonnay is giving this wine the balance of richness and acidity.

2013 Presqu'ile Chardonnay, Santa Maria Valley

Our debut single vineyard from our friends, the Murphy family, is made of three different Chardonnay clones (76, 131, 134) planted in Garey sandy loam and Marina sand soils. In the Santa Maria Valley, winemakers speak about the differences of soils within its homogenous cool climate. Generall, there are the soils of the Noth, elder soils, the soils of the South and marine-based soils. It is th Southern soils in which our close friends, the Murphy family, decided to plant their own Estate vineyard in 2009. Their understanding of great wines gave them the guidance to identify this site as being relative to other high-qality vineyards in the Santa maria Valley. Our debut single vineyard Presqu'ile (press-KEEL) Chardonnay comes from three different clones planted in Garey Sandy Loam and Marina Sand soils. It was primarily fermented in stainless steel, then underwent Malolactic Fermentation and aged for 11 months in neutral French oak.
